Job Description
Crate Entertainment, the creators of Grim Dawn and Farthest Frontier, are seeking an experienced 3D Character Artist to help lead the visual development of units on RTS project. The RTS is set in the Grim Dawn universe and gameplay will be in the vein of StarCraft / Age of Kings. These will be lower-poly characters in the range of 5-8k tris on average. Given the camera angle, it will be important that you have an eye for creating distinctive profiles and adjusting the proportions of things to read at default zoom. We are aiming for a low level of stylization to help keep characters readable but somewhat gritty and real feeling.
Note that this is not a people-management position. Our team is mostly comprised of veterans and we look to hire individuals who are self-driven, capable of managing their own time, identifying work that needs to be done and solving problems.
While this primarily a character modeling position, as a small team, it is often helpful to have team members who are willing and able to pitch in, in different areas when needed, as the work needs fluctuate be it environmental, props, UI, characters, etc.
This is a full-time position with benefits. Our studio operates remotely but candidates must be based in the US.

About the Company
Crate is a small, indie studio best known for developing and self-publishing the ARPG “Grim Dawn,” which has sold over 3 million copies on PC with 4 million units of DLC. Our latest title, the town-builder, Farthest Frontier, has sold over half a million copies in it’s first two months of early access.
Due to this success, our studio is well-funded, completely financially and creatively independent and not answerable to any sort of investors or publishers. Because of this, we can offer greater job security and a lower stress work environment than most larger developers. We are not beholden to milestone deliverables, own all of the IP we create and believe that as long as we’re working efficiently, the game will be done in however long it takes for us to feel satisfied that it’s ready. By working in smaller teams, we are able to develop big games on a smaller budget and at a slower pace that allows time to add more detail and nuance than often exists in many bigger budget titles.
